Why Do They Make Some Drugs Illegal but Not Others?

Question by MthrNatures_Son: Why do they make some drugs illegal but not others?
I remember how great Ephedra was…an herb that could speed up the metabolism, cause you to lose weight, give you increased energy. Then a couple people got heart attacks and died or something…it was maybe a handful of people out of millions who took it. It was taken off the market

Same thing with Viox…excellent way to alleviate back troubles. A few people had problems, they removed it.

Marijuana may reduce some types of cancer cells, help people eat, help people manage pain, yet no one has really died from it.

Alcohol kills over 100,000 people per year. Tobacco kills even more than that.

Why do we permit some drugs that will kill many more people but not other drugs that kill a relative few?
To poster below, I’m going to disappear for a while when they legalize everything. i”ll be too preoccupied to sell it to your children. But I’ll make sure I leave your children alone no matter what…fair is fair, you can kill me if I bother your children. (all this on a 1/2 a joint!)
Excellent write ups everyone…keep em coming!

Could you imagine the war that would start because someone outlawed tobacco? Nationwide nicotine cravings would lead to the next nuclear catastrophe.
