Drug Treatment News: Women’s Drug Treatment – the First Step to Freedom

Everyday in California hundreds of women enter into a drug abuse treatment facility, many of these women seeking treatment have battled their addiction to drugs for many years before actually seeking treatment.

The Facts

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2006, 23.6 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse problem (9.6 percent of the persons aged 12 or older). Of these, only 2.5 million-10.8 percent of those who needed treatment-received it at a specialty facility. From this total, almost half of this number (23.6 million) were women.

The report goes on to say that more than 17 percent admitted to having abuse issues with drugs and alcohol, while the remaining only had drug abuse issues.

With this alarming trend in drug abuse in the US, the substance abuse community is in a daily struggle to help meet the needs of those seeking treatment for drug abuse and addiction. Many state and federal treatment programs have a long waiting list, while those persons fortunate enough to have health insurance can readily find a drug treatment center in a matter of hours.

First things first

Many women suffering from drug abuse confuse the priorities of treatment for their drug addictions and either put off entering into a drug treatment program thinking they can detox themselves or they place different needs ahead of the recovery process such as maintaining employment or the fear of losing a personal relationship. The fact of the matter is that by continuing on the path of drug addiction all of these things are in considerable jeopardy of being lost anyway as the need for drugs always takes control and becomes the addicted women’s priority.

As the saying goes in the recovery community, “you can’t hear the message until you’re ready to hear.” What this means is that until a woman has hit bottom and has no other options available, and little else can be done to force or make her seek recovery!

The good news

The freedom from drug addiction is only a phone call away for any women who is ready to seek help for her problem with drugs, and the sooner she enters into a drug treatment center the sooner she can rebuild her life and breath in the sweetness of freedom from the painful bonds of drug abuse. The road to continued sobriety is a one-day at a time stepping stone on a newly forged path of recovery.

While in treatment for drug abuse, those who are new in recovery will find that they are never alone and will meet and make many new friends while practicing a new way of life free of drugs. It is also very important to point out that every women who has entered into recovery from drug say their new life in recovery is much sweeter and far better than anything they have ever known!
