Can You Help Me With Some Character Conflicts?

Question by nathanael b: Can you help me with some character conflicts?
Title: “Butterflies that do not fly”

This dramatic story is about a (African-American) mother and her six kids, (four boys and two girls…who are adults) who are not only dealing with their own individual dilemmas but their family issues as well, which includes the recent death of their father. They also have to deal with their built-up hostility towards each other.
Their grandmother recited a poem to them when they were kids. It included the phrase “Butterflies that do not fly” and like the butterflies in the poem, they all come face-to-face with the conflict as to why they cannot move forward in life. (Each character recites the part of the poem that reflects to their struggles)

What are some conflicts that are not cliche…(that would fit this story) that deal with people of color?

1. Someone has a gambling addiction instead of the cliche drug addiction.
2. One family member is a spendthrift and continually seeks to borrow money from the others.
3. A elderly family member is experiencing poor health and medicaid doesn’t cover all the needed expenses. The other family members are concerned about what steps to take.
4. The children excel in school and get bullied for being a “smarty pants.”
5. Single fatherhood is not cliche.
7. Someone loses a job in this recession and is concerned about how to pay the bills.
8. African Americans maintaining a committed long distance relationship is not cliche.
The possibilities are endless. Just watch the news. Anyway, hope this helps.
